Silk Lingerie: Pure, Natural Luxury

Lingerie at first considered merely functional then later considered risqué, has gone mainstream. Lingerie boutiques have sprung up in shopping malls all over the world, and the Internet is full of online lingerie shops. Frederick’s of Hollywood made lingerie sexy and naughty. Today, brands like Victoria’s Secret make lingerie sophisticated, elegant and very mainstream.

Lingerie is available as individual pieces or in sets. Sets, are composed of individual pieces, but also have the advantage of having been designed to look good together. Typically, lingerie sets are purchased as a unit, and include everything you need to complete the look. Sometimes you may build a set by purchasing individual items that are designed to look good together. I:

When choosing lingerie, the primary purpose, most likely, is visual appeal. Comfort also matters. There is one fabric that satisfies both these criteria elegantly and beautifully, and that’s silk. Silk is known for being expensive as well as elegant. The price is largely viewed as justified, however. Silk has the unique ability to keep your body cool even as it is close to your body. It is soft and has a beautiful luster. The soft, smooth texture cannot be duplicated with artificial fabrics like satin.

Silk has a number of other advantages as well. Given its unique protein structure, it turns out that silk is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics. If you have problems with other garments being itchy and scratchy and maybe even causing you to break out in an itchy rash after you take the garment off, it may not be the soap. It may be the fabric itself. Silk next to your skin may eliminate the problem.

Silk is suitable for any climate. It’s warm and cozy in the winter and comfortably cool on the hottest, sweatiest summer day. Its temperature regulating ability is all natural and gives it the paradoxical ability to warm and cool simultaneously. Silk consistently outperforms other fabrics in summer and winter. As a second layer, it can even warm without adding to the overall bulk of what you’re wearing.

Silk is highly absorbent. It can absorb up to 30 percent of its weight in moisture without feeling even slightly damp. It absorbs perspiration and lets your skin breathe, wicking away moisture from your body. Compare this to cotton, which although fairly effective at absorbing moisture, tends to hold on to it, and remain damp to the touch. Is that really what you want next to your skin?

In spite of its delicate appearance and reputation as finery, silk is strong. Silk is one of the most durable fabrics, manmade or natural. It resists stains and odors incredibly well. Silk is also wrinkle and tear resistant. In fact, silk is so wrinkle resistant that it hardly wrinkles at all. Additionally, it dries very quickly.

Although silk has only a mild resistance to abrasion, it is the strongest natural fiber of all. Its tensile strength is legendary, even competing with steel yarn. Steel yarn may be strong, but chances are you wouldn’t look very sexy in steel lingerie.
